John D. "Jack" Ritter was born February 9, 1923 in Burlington, Oklahoma, son of John and Mabel (Hahn) Ritter.

Jack joined the United States Army Air Corp April 13, 1943 to serve his country during World War II. He served in the Western Pacific. While serving there, he received the Silver Star and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged October 27, 1945.

On July 26, 1961, Jack was united in marriage with Catherine "Kate" Scolfield in Columbus, Nebraska and Jack welcomed Kate's two children, Richard and Sue. The family moved to Anthony to make their home in 1961.

Jack had a loved of horses and spent his life raising and racing thoroughbreds. He also did his own training and worked as a Farrier for many stables. The family moved back and forth from Anthony to the race tracks in Nebraska in the summer. Along with being horse trainers, they also helped raise many children and became affectionately known as "Poppa and Granny."

On November 17, 2011, Jack passed away in the Anthony Medical Center at the age of 88 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Mel, Ike,and Gene Ritter; sister, Sue Ritter; and great grandson, Drew Ciemny.

Jack will be deeply missed by his wife of 50 years, Catherine "Kate" Ritter of the home in Anthony; son Richard Ciemny and wife, Jeannie of Derby, KS; daughter Sue Simpson and husband Jack of Burwell, Nebraska; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2011 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony with Pastor Zane Brooks officiating.

The U.S. Air Force Honor Guard will present Military Honors at the Forest Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.

Memorials have been established with either the Anthony Senior Citizens Center or the Anthony Community Care Center in his memory.
