Mt. Carmel - John Palmer Hilton, 84, 234 Belmont Ave, Mt. Carmel, died at 6 p.m. Friday (Aug. 4, 1989) in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following a long illness.Mr. Hilton was a charter member of the Mountain View Baptist Church.He was preceded in death by one sister, Nell Fisher; five brothers, Nat Hilton, Adam Hilton, and Sneed Hilton; and one grandson.Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leona Hilton, Mt. Carmel; seven daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Edith) Southerland, Mrs. Keith (Janis) Collier, both of Mt. Carmel, Jewel Gelburd Hilton, Mrs. Ray (Wanda Sue) Southerland, Debbie Coates, all of Kingsport, and Mrs. Paul (Helen) Ferrell, Church Hill, and Mrs. Robert (Linda Connie) Bowman, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, John T. Hilton, Decatur, Al. and Danny W. Hilton, Houston, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Burton, Rogersville; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lyons Smith and the Rev. Walt Drinnon officiating.Burial will follow in Church Hill Memory Gardens.
