At the age of seven he came with his parents to America, locating in Rochelle, Illinois, residing there for only a short time. In the fall of 1885 the family came to the Dakota Territory, settling in what is now Hyde County.
When a young man he took up a homestead in Douglas Township where he endured the hardships of pioneer life.
On Oct. 11, 1905, he was united in marriage to D. Margaret Knudtson. This union was blessed with five children, all of whom survive; Clarence A. Sunding, Leona M. Weidenbach, Elsie V. Odegaard, Daniel T. Sunding, and Ella M. Weidenbach, all of Highmore. All his children were present at his bedside at the time of his passing. His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 27, 1939.
As a child Mr. Sunding was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was an active member of the American Lutheran church of Edwin.
