Gwyn, Joseph D.

GLOUCESTER - Joseph D. Gwyn, 73, son of the late Blanche Deal and Samuel L. Gwyn, died peacefully at his home June 10, 2006. Born and raised in Naxera, Joe was employed by the telephone company 40 years before retiring. Following retirement, he pursued the telephone business with Gwyn's Telephone Repair Service. Joe served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. An active, dedicated member of Severn Presbyterian Church, he served in many capacities, including a 42-year term as Elder, President of the Men's Brotherhood, member of the choir and the Southern Gospels Singing Group. He also served with great distinction on the board of the cemetery. Joe loved the outdoors. His many pastime enjoyments included the Robins Neck Sportsman's Club, fishing and gardening, but most of all, Joe gave with great honor and dignity of his time to the many needs of helping others. His smile brought warmth and illumination and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tabb, Jesse, Saint, Pat, Boyd, Floyd and Statesman, as well as a sister, Louise. Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Ruth; sisters, Elsie Dame and Helen Gunn; brothers, John Gwyn and Bernard Gwyn; sisters-in-law, Barbara Hallahan and Diane Harris; and brother-in-law, Donnie Jenkins; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Services, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Bunting and Pastor Billy West, will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Severn Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
