Bernard Lee Gwyn, 76, peacefully passed away at his home on Nov. 28, 2013. He was born in Gloucester and was a resident of Newport News since he graduated from high school in the class of 1955. Bernard received his Associate Degree in Drafting and Design through the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School and was employed with the shipyard and with Gibbs and Cox for more than 50 years as a marine designer and Designing Engineer Supervisor. He also enjoyed working with one of his beloved brothers, Boyd Gwyn, owner of Gwyn Realty, as a licensed realtor for a few years.
He is predeceased by his parents, Samuel L. and Blanche Deal Gwyn and his son, Bradford Ashe Gwyn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Gerda Eleanor Gwyn; his children, Christopher and Teresa; his brother John Gwyn and his sister, Elsie Dame.
Bernard Gwyn was known as an exceptionally kind and giving person who loved his family and animals dearly. Memorial donations to celebrate his appreciation for all living beings may be made to the Peninsula SPCA , c/o Liz Blake, Peninsula SPCA, 523 J Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 5th at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. A graveside service will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday officiated by the Reverend Bill West.
