JEWELL W. AND JULIA (GOFF) Doan, Sr.

Jewell W. Doan, son of George Henry Doan was born in a sod house on his parents' homestead in Logan Township, Jul. 31, 1893. Jewell received his elementary schooling in a school house about two blocks from the homestead, this school was moved to Brittin, ND and became a church. Brittin was a big little town with a general store, lumber yard, post office and had lots of community affairs, picnics, church and dances. This is where Jewell met his wife Julia. Julia was born in Richland county Dec. 21, 1889, the daughter of Frank Goff and Charlotte Allen of Lidgerwood, ND. Julia came to Brittain (sic) to visit her sister and brother-in-law (Joe Bauman) who was the railroad section foreman. Jewell and Julia were married Oct. 8, 1917 in Bismarck, ND. Jewell was a hard working, energetic, dancing man. He would work all day and dance all night, never missing a single dance. Times were not always easy; he worked at many different jobs to earn extra money. He worked for the township, railroad, and when his parents lives in Sacramento, he and his family would go out there to visit them. He worked in the cannery while there. In 1928 he built the new and present ranch house, doing most of the work himself. Over the years he built 7 large quonset buildings on the ranch which are being used today. In the winters he would make these rafters for himself as well as selling them to other people. He bough his first Black Angus cattle from Frank Gougnour of Hazelton, ND (father of Dr. Myron Gougnour, prominent Bismarck doctor). He also liked to try his hand at making machinery. He made the first tractor-mounted loader stacker, in the area, which he used for several years to feed corn to his cattle. The factory representative from International came out and looked at it. Soon after, this was to be the usual piece of equipment on a ranch. In 1945, he started taking flying lessons and bought his first airplane shortly thereafter. This he enjoyed and had lots of fun. His many friends remember him by his greeting of his airplane. He flew his airplane until 1965 when he suffered a stroke. He was a fun loving man, always trying to get a person to laugh or play a joke on them. One such incident is when one day he was having his shoe repaired and he stood outside on the sidewalk, asking for donations to get his shoe out of the hospital. He signed many of his checks with a drawing of a rabbit which the bank would accept. At the time of his death he had acquired 10 1/2 sections of land, all in the surrounding area, and had built up his cow heard to 500 head. They had 1 son,Jewell W. Jr., born Nov. 7, 1921. In 1961 he named the ranch Black Leg Ranch, as it is known today. On Sept. 15, 1967 he had a fatal heart attack on his ranch. Julia is now living at Saint Vincent's Nursing Home, Bismarck, ND.
