Son of Maria Hoover Byer and Israel Doan(8), Abraham(7), Joseph(6), Joseph(5), Israel(4), Daniel(3), Daniel(2), Deacon John Doane. I Also have his birth date listed as 21 Jan 1857, but his death certificate lists it as 27 Jan 1856. George moved with his family from Canada to Michigan in 1865, after the Civil War. After his father died in 1868, he moved with mother and siblings to Cherokee Co, KS; they are listed on the 1870 census. He and his mother and some of the family returned to MI ast some point. George moved to ND and homesteaded in Burleigh County, possibly in 1882; however, grandson Jewell Doan, Jr. reported it was in 1890. He was married in Feb. 1886. George became a citizen in Burleigh County, ND, on 12 Nov 1889. He and his wife later moved to Sacramento, CA in 1917 due to a daughter's poor health. He died there from chronic myocarditis.

GEORGE HENRY AND LOUISA (Corder) DOAN

George Henry Doan was born in Ontario, Canada on Jan. 27, 1856, and came to the United States, living in Grand Rapids, MI where he had relatives. From there he and another young man decided to come to Dakota Territory to become farmers. George decided to stay and married Louisa Corder, (born in 1869, in Illinois), this being around 1887. George became an American citizen in 1889. He filed a homestead claim on the E 1/4, 28-138-77, in Logan township in 1890. He added another 1/4 by filing a tree claim, then in 1902 bought the NW 1/4 34-138-77 for $500.00. Their first post office was established on this 1/4, operated by some people named McFerson (sci). This was his ranch. They built a sod house and began their life in Dakota Territory, with all of the children being born here. Later they built a new wood frame house. In 1917 they sold the ranch to a son, Jewell, and moved to Sacramento, CA, because their daughter May had tuberculosis. They bought a fruit farm and an apartment house, living there till George passing away on Jan. 19, 1932. Louisa died on Jan. 16, 1942. They are buried at Forest [sic, East} Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, CA.

Their children are as follows: Georgie May, born May 14, 1888, died Oct. 26, 1926 was unmarried; Elva Jean, born Dec. 1, 1890, died Oct 28, 1943, married H. Vern Crary Jul. 3, 1916. Both girls buried in Forest [sic, East} awn Cemetery, Sacramento, CA; George Hobart, born 1896, died Sept. 22, 1900, is buried at Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, ND; Jewell W. born Jul. 31, 1893, died Sept. 15, 1967, is buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, ND. He married Julia Margaret Goff Oct. 8, 1917; John Cecil, born 1899, died Mar. 17, 1952 is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck, ND. He married Marion (Sacramento, maiden name unknown), later married Ida Bender, Bismarck, ND; Arline D., Born Aug. 9, 1906, married Lester Fry, Sacramento, CA. They have 2 children and are still living there; and George Henry, Jr., born Jul. 19, 1915, married and is living in Sacramento, CA. There are 3 babies buried in the Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, ND.

A disastrous prairie fire swept over the country southeast of Menoken Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, coming from the direction of Long Lake City. It destroyed 5,500 bushels of oats, one hundred tons of hay and other property valued at $200, belonging to H. C. Sinclair; wheat in the stack, a valuable horse, cow and calf belonging to J. B. Glasscock. J. O. Rhineburger lost a stable and contents estimated at $150, George Doan, stable and contents valued at $300.

George H. Doan, 76, retired farmer and a Californian for fifteen years, died yesterday for the Sisters Hospital. His widow, Mrs. Louise Doan, and two children, George and Arlena Doan, live in this city.

The body has been taken to the James Garlick chapel, where funeral arrangements will be completed late to-day.

Doan was a native of Canada. He was the brother [sic, father] of Jewel and John Doan of North Dakota and Mrs. H. B. Crery of Oakland.
