Israel was the son of Elizabeth (Betsy) Swartz and Abraham Doan(7), Joseph(6), Joseph(5), Israel(4), Daniel(3), Daniel(2), Deacon John Doane(1). He was born at Walpole, Haldimand Co, Ontario. He was married to Maria Hoover Byer/Bier (who married #2 Nathaniel Smith) in Walpole, Ontario on Oct. 14, 1850. He was a farmer, sailor and carpenter. He and his father had a sawmill. He built a carriage shop at Cheapside, Walpole Twp, Haldimand Co, Ontario (1862?). Sailed on Lake Erie in spring & summer--and may have been a pirate. Immigrated from Canada in 1865. Father of William Samuel, Abraham A., George Henry, David Israel, John Freeman & Anna Belle (md. Sawyer).

There are varying records for him: one at Haire Cemetery or at Lowing Cemetery, and possibly at Georgetown Cemetery. It is possible that he was moved from the older cemetery and re-buried in the newer cemetery with his wife when she died.
