WILLIAM BARTELS
Services were held Dec. 11 for William Bartels, 90, at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, Monticello, with burial at the Church cemetery. The Rev. Harvey O. Gilbertson officiated at the services.
William Bartels, Hopkinton died Dec. 7 at the American Health Care Center, Cedar Rapids, after an extended illness.
William Bartels was born April 18, 1894 near Monticello, the son of Hermann and Wilhelmine Husmann Bartels. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home.
William Bartels and Mary Dirks were married Aug. 23, 1921, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in the Monticello area. Bill went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad and the couple moved to Delaware.
In 1955, Bill went to work for Iowa Steel and Iron Works in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Hopkinton the past 43 years. He was baptized May 14, 1894 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 4, 1909, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Maynard Bartels of Maquoketa and Dean Bartels of Freeport, Ill., four daughters, Mrs. Inez Tucker and Mrs. Delores Mohr, both of Hopkinton and Mrs. Leona Leytem and Phyllis Fulwider, both of Anamosa; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lena Arthofer of Dubuque and Emma Schrader and Minnie Herren, both of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, six brothers and three sisters.
Casket bearers were Edward Tucker, Robin Wertz, Ronald Leytem, James Grothusen, Keith Marugg Sr., and Jeff Fulwider.
