John J. Conley was born in the town of Darlington, Nov. 13, 1863, and died in this city, April 8, 1916. He was a twin brother to Father James Conley, who died in Nebraksa. He attended the country school, Dist 10, the Sister's school in Darlington for two years, and in 1880 he entered the St. Francis Seminary near Milwaukee to study for the priesthood and remained there several years.
Not feeling the call to that vocation, he took up clerking, and worked for a number of years in Barlow's store in this city. For ten years he worked for Levi Bros., at Praire du Chien, the last four years having entire management of their large double store, when the Brothers opened a store in Brooklyn, N.Y.
After the Levi's store was sold, he clerked in a department store in Reedsburg. In the meantime he married, and his wife died at Reedsburg, about sixteen years ago. Soon after her death, he went on the road as a traveling salesman and later clerked for Grossman Bros., in this city, while his last work was for Joseph Grossman in Platteville.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret M. and three brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Council No. 1080 Knights of Columbus of this city. Rev. James Nevins delivered a beautiful tribute to his memory, as he knew him thirty six years ago at the Seminary, where John and his twin brother were athletic leaders and knew hiim from that time to his death.
