Luther May Burnum was born November 11, 1894 in Hill County, Texas. He was the son of William Henry Burnum and Lee (Willbanks) Burnum. In 1903 the family moved from Texas to Delhi, Beckham County, Oklahoma by covered wagon.

Luther served in the U. S. Army in WWI. He married Maggie Bell. They had no children. Luther homesteaded 120 acres near Gooding, Idaho in 1944. After 12-13 years he moved to California. Here he raised race horses.

In 1967 Luther won the championship Quarter horse purse worth $111,300 at Las Alamitos, California track.

Luther died in March of 1980 at Clovis, California and is buried at the Hanford Cemetery, Kings County, California.
