Mrs. Sibel T. Burgess passed away quietly at her home July 25, 1914 at the age of 96 years, 9 months, 22 days. Mrs. Burgess was a Butler, a New Englander, born in Connecticut on October 3, 1817. When she was two years of age she moved with her parents to Bridgewater, Oneida County, NY where she remained until at the age of 22 she became the bride of John Beebe when she and her husband moved to Utica, NY. Two children were born to them, Alice and John. After two and one half years of married life, her husband died and a few months after the little daughter followed. On September 3, 1848 she became the wife of John Burgess, who was also from Connecticut. Hearing of the great advantages of the northwest, Mr. and Mrs. Burgess decided to try their fortunes as a few others had done in the great territory, which was then an almost unexplored wilderness. The young couple and her son, John Beebe Jr. started from Binghamton, NY October 3, 1848 by way of the Chenago Canal going to Utica, where they took passage over the Erie Canal to Buffalo, thence over the lakes to Milwaukee. On arriving at Milwaukee this young couple went to Beaver Dam with an ox team. They stayed at Beaver Dam but a few weeks when they pushed on, coming to the town of Sun Prairie, arriving in December, 1848, where they settled on the farm 4 miles east of the village where they erected a log house which they occupied until 1855, when a stone house was built which is still standing, one of the old landmarks of the county. In the fall of 1906 a modern home was erected on the farm a mile east of the village, where Mrs. Burgess and her two youngest sons, August and Claude have since resided. All of Mrs. Burgess' children were born on the old homestead, consisting of six living sons; Eugene of Nebraska, Otis of Texas, Hogarth of Illinois, Sherman of Madison, Augustus and Claude at home; and two daughters, Ruth, who died in infancy and Helen, who passed away on December 22, 1884. Mr. Burgess died Nov. 19, 1885. Twenty grandchildren call Mrs. Burgess grandmother and to eight she is a great-grandmother. Although greatly advanced in years, Mrs. Burgess always took an interest in current events. Up to several years ago, she made trips to the west to visit her sons also east to the scenes of her early life. Her last illness was of about four weeks duration and her death marks the passing of one of Dane county's oldest residents. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in the home. Rev. Davis of Cottage Grove officiated and interment was in the family lot in Pierceville Cemetery. The singers were Mrs. W. N. Mosel, Mrs. C. B. Hayden, W. W. Hayden, and Dr. C. A. Cobb with Mrs. D. C. Angell as accompanist. The bearers were four of her sons, H. G. Burgess, S. T. Burgess, A. M. Burgess, and C. F. Burgess. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were H. G. Burgess of Kingston, IL, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Phillips of Madison, Ralph and Jay Burgess, and Mr. and Mrs. George Kenyon of Beaver Dam.
