Sherman Towne Burgess, 90, Dane county register of deeds between 1907 and 1911, died Friday morning at a Madison hospital. Mr. Burgess was born in Sun Prairie. He was a graduate of Butler University, Indianapolis, IN and served as deputy county treasurer in Turner county, SD for some time. Mr. Burgess also was clerk of circuit court, Scott county, KS and justice of the peace in Sun Prairie. Mr. Burgess was in the real estate business in Madison until his retirement a number of years ago. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. George Mitchell of Cottage Grove, Mrs. H. E. Beckman of Rockford, IL, and Mrs. F. D. Crutcher of Louisville, KY and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in a Sun Prairie funeral home. The Rev. J. L. Walker officiated and burial was in the village cemetery. Pallbearers were the three grandsons, Redfield and James Mitchell and John Beckman of Rockford, Stanley Beers of Milwaukee, Dr. L. B. Cobb and C. H. Blaschka. Mr. Burgess has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Mitchell for a part of the time in the last few years and called Sun Prairie his home.
