Augustus M. Burgess, lifelong resident of the town of Sun Prairie, passed away at the home of his niece, Mrs. George Mitchell Sunday, Jan 14 at the age of 79 years, 8 months, and 9 days. He was born May 5, 1860 in the town of Sun Prairie on the farm now known as the Robert Yelk farm and was one of a family of 8 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Burgess. About 1907 he and his brother, Claude, now deceased, purchased the farm one mile east of the village, which has since been his home. Declining years and failing health forced him to give up his bachelor home and for the past three weeks he had been cared for in the home of his niece. "Gus" Burgess, as he was best and more familiarly known, was one of the township's most respected and prominent farmers during the active years of his life and in age, one of its revered. He served several years either as chairman or member of the town board, as well as a member of the county board. He served as director of the Medina Mutual Insurance Co. for 47 years and was treasurer of the company for 25 years. He is survived by one brother, Sherman T. Burgess, who arrived here Tuesday from Louisville, KY, where he has been spending a portion of the winter with one of his daughters. Several nieces and nephews also survive to cherish his memory. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Jones & Tuschen Funeral Home at 2:00. Rev. Roy P. Steen, pastor of the M. E. Church officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in Pierceville Cemetery. The pallbearers were John Skalitzky, Jr., Frank Betlach, Franz Schuster, Hugo Tiedt, Charles Schuch, and Carl Weisensel, all neighbors of the deceased.
