James Allen homesteaded in Oklahoma and did a number of things. He moved to Independence Missouri in the early 1900's. While looking for a lot to build a house on, he purchased land from John Foster. Not only did James buy the lots, but he became enchanted with John Foster's oldest daughter, Elsie. James and Elsie were married June 22, 1916. James did build two houses on the lot, so the family lived in one and rented the other. James had a grocery and dry goods store in the area. The Mannering family kept growing and there were now 6 children when the depression hit. They moved to Chalk Level near Lowry City, where James sister, Teene, and her family had a farm. They weathered the depresseion and returned to Independence. James passed away at the age of 62, 15 March 1944.
