James Alfred was born March 12, 1839 to John and Julia Ann Garwood Mannering in Indiana. When he was 8 years old, his parents moved to South Bend, Indiana where they remained one year, going then to Hancock County, Illinois. Here he received his education. He farmed and raised stock in Iowa from 1856 to 1866. He then moved to St. Clair County, Missouri. He owned 200 acres ~ 2 1/2 miles northeast of Lowry City, Missouri and held the office of township assessor. On February 11, 1864, he married Miss Susan Philura Evans, a native of Illinois.
Together they had ten children;

Susan was born to parents James and Hulda Evans near Carthage Illinois on March 15, 1846. She died near Bentonville Arkansas while visiting her niece on October 12, 1896 (50 years old). She is buried in Park Grove Cemetery in Lowry City Missouri, although James Alfred memoralized her on his headstone here in Independence, Missouri.
