Elsie Foster was born in the Bronx, New York City to John Fred Foster and Mary Jane Crawford Foster. She lived and went to school in New York City and Montreal, Canada. After her mother passed away in 1908 she went to live with an aunt in New Jersey, and later New York City. At the age of 20, she came to Independence to live with her father and younger sister, Lottie. She married James Allen Mannering June 22, 1916 in Independence, Jackson County Missouri.

Together they had seven children:
James Donald (1917-2007)
Wayne Frederick (1919-2011)
Ray Gilmore (1921-2011)
Living daughter
Guy O'dell (1926-2002)
Living son
William Paul (1932-1998)

Elsie and James Allen had a grocery and dry goods store in Kansas City when the depression hit. They moved to Chalk Level near Lowry City where James sister, Christina (Teene) had a farm. They weathered the depression and moved back to Independence. James died in 1944. Elsie worked at Lake City Arsenal, the Independence Sanitarium and the Jones Store company until she retired well into her 70's. She lived to be 91 years of age.

She was a dedicated mother and Christian and loved my all.


From her obituary: Mrs. Elsie L. Mannering, 91, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug 17, 1986 at the Independence Regional Health Center.
She was born in New York City and had lived in this area since 1913. Mrs. Mannering worked in the credit department at the Jones Store Co., for 14 years and retired in 1966. She was a member of the Stone Church congregation of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints. She was a former member of the Messiah Choir and the Navy Mothers.
