Mrs. Hattie Emma Cleer, 71, wife of Henry W. Cleer, 2716 Fifth St.., Peru, died at People's hospital at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
She had been ill for two years and hospitalized for five days.
Mrs. Cleer who was born southeast of Ladd in Bureau County, May 10, 1884, was the daughter of Edward and Ernestine Smith Fiedler. She was baptized in Zion E. and R. church, Peru, educated in Bureau county rural schools and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church, Peru.
Her marriage to Henry W. Cleer took place Oct. 7, 1903 in Dimmick township with the Rev. Paul Brauns, pastor of Zion E. and R. church officiating. In March 1904, the Cleers moved to a farm near Spencer, Ia., and a year later they moved to a farm northwest of Peru where they resided for 42 years before coming to Peru nine years ago.
Mrs. Cleer was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid society and of Lily Lodge, Daughters of Rebekah.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mabel ) Batten and Mrs. Leo (Lila) Gapen, both of Peru; two grandchildren, Mrs. Golbert (Charlene Batten) Smith and Gary Gapen and two great-grandchildren, Jill and Heidi Smith, all of Peru. Two brothers, Gustave and Anton Fiedler, both of Spencer. Ia., three sisters, Mrs. Louis (Mary) Greiner, Colo, Ia., Mrs. George (Ida) Vogt, Ladd and Mrs. Arthur (Pearl) Harbeck, Peru, survive, and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents, two brothers, Herman and Charles, preceded in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. John's Lutheran church, Peru. The Rev. W.C. Liefeld, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in Peru City cemetery.
Friends may call at the Elias chapel after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and until 11 a.m. Thursday when the body willl be taken to the church to lie in state until time of service.
