Robert Wayne Dochterman, 88, of Arbela, Missouri, died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Missouri.
He was born January 23, 1925, on a farm near Granger, Missouri, to James Andrew and Alice Elizabeth Billings Dochterman. Bob attended Flint Ridge School in Clark County. He married Carol Lee Hyde at Memphis, Missouri, April 9, 1950. To this union three children were born.
Robert served in the U.S. Army, W.W. II, from July 11, 1944 to August 26, 1946 in the Infantry as a heavy machine gunner. He was wounded in action in Okinawa for which he received the Purple Heart. He held many jobs before retiring, Clark County Road and Bridge Crew, co-owner of Bud and Shorty's Garage in Granger, mechanic for Moffett Implement Co., Wiss and Wiss, and Auto Credit in Keokuk. He also worked many years for the Scotland County Water District. He was a farmer in Scotland and Clark counties and farmed the homestead where he was born and raised until five years ago. He was a life member of the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post VFW #4958 in Memphis.
Bob enjoyed gardening and giving the produce to neighbors and friends. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter, MaKenna, and he derived great pleasure just sitting on his porch and waving at people as they drove by.
He is survived by his children; Peggy Ann Dochterman of Kansas City, Missouri and Ronald Gene Dochterman of Memphis, Missouri. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Jennifer Jean Dochterman of Columbus, Ohio; Anna Marie Dochterman and her friend, Jason Glass, of Memphis, Missouri; Deidra Alice Musgrove and her husband, Cody, of Gorin, Missouri; great grandchildren, MaKenna and Paxton Musgrove, of Gorin, Missouri and special adopted grandchildren, Julia Vice and her son, Gavin, of Memphis, Missouri and Amanda Crane and her children, Jillian and Dawson, of Wyaconda, Missouri. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law: Edith Dochterman and Joetta Fountain, both of Kahoka, Missouri and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol, on September 12, 2005; a son, Donald Wayne Dochterman and a grandson, Darrin Allen Dochterman; three sisters: Wavie Waters, Cleo Hawkins and Helen Brotherton; four brothers: Preston Dochterman, Otho Dochterman, Clarence "Colonel" Dochterman and John "Hank" Dochterman.
Visitation will open at 1 P.M. Sunday at Memphis Funeral Home with the family present to receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 P.M.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 10 A.M. at the funeral home with Reverend Dee Wiley officiating. Music will be provided by Joan Hinds and Joe Fulk. Burial will follow in the Combs Cemetery, Luray, Missouri. Casket bearers will be Richard Hyde, David Hyde, Kevin Fountain, Randy Mathes, Junior Bertram and Michael Tom Billings. Full military honors will be accorded by the Missouri Funeral Honors Team.
