DIED AT AGE 48

Robert J. Cleary, 48, principal of Bergan High School since 1983, died at 9:08 a.m. Saturday at his home.
Cleary, of 3513 W. Sodus Court, where he had lived 10 years, had spent about 12 years in hospitals after a 1956 swimming accident. Cleary received his degree from the University of Illinois through a combination of correspondence courses and campus work.
In the fall of 1972, he became an English teacher at Bergan. He was promoted to department chairman the next year, and received his master's degree from Bradley University in 1974. In 1978, he was selected by Selection Research Inc. in Nebraska as one of the nation's most outstanding teachers. In the fall of 1983 he was named principal.
Born June 17, 1938 in Peoria to Michael J. and Clarys Fulton Cleary, he married Ann Montgomery on Aug. 2, 1975 in Peoria.
She survives, along with his mother of Peoria; five sisters, Mrs. Cozz (Colleen) Regele of Glendora, Calif., Sister Catherine Cleary of Nauvoo, Mrs Fred (Anne) Lyons of Burnsville, Minn., Mrs John (Clarys) Souter of Chicago and Sister Audrey Cleary of Bloomington; four brothers, Dr. Thomas Cleary and David Cleary of Alexandria, Va., Michael Cleary of Gridley and James Cleary of Liburn, Ga. He is preceded in death by his father.
He graduated from Spalding in 1956 and was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church. The Rev. William Watson and Franciscan friars concelebrating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bergan, with a prayer service there at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Wright and Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial may be made to Bergan.
