Jones was the son of Jonathan Low, originally from Spartanburg, South Carolina, and his second wife, Martha Ella Roach Low. Around 1913, he married Mary Ethel Mattingly and they became parents to three daughters: Maura Kathryn, Virginia Sue, and Martha Ellen. Unfortunately, Mary Ethel became very ill with brain cancer and died in 1926. For a while, Jones and his three daughters lived in the home of his half-sister, Mattie Kibler, in Sardis. At that time he was a salesman, but he also had other occupations in his life including being a farmer. In 1931 he married Dovie Stewart who became a wonderful mother to his three daughters. Eventually the new family settled in Belzoni, Mississippi. Jones contracted stomach cancer which eventually took his life.
