Lloyd James Acker, 78, formerly of Clover Creek Road, Huston Township, rural Martinsburg, died Thursday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on the family farmstead in Huston Township, son of the late Roy E. and Ruth O. (Kensinger) Acker. He married Shirley M. Grant on Aug. 21, 1954, in Altoona.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years; two sons: Rusty and Randy and wife, Joyce, all of rural Martinsburg; four daughters: Susan Dubbs and companion, Mike Brush, and Sandy Steele and husband, Terry, all of rural Martinsburg, Sally Nicholas and husband, John, of Apollo and Shari Figurelli and husband, Greg, of Hollidaysburg; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Lloyd was a 1952 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. He retired as a dairy farmer on his family's farmstead on Clover Creek in 2000 after 46 years. He previously was employed as a truck driver for Ken Ferry and also at Burchfield's Inc., Martinsburg, and Green Giant Cannery, Martinsburg.
Lloyd was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. He was a 65-year "life member" of Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company Station 80, where he formerly served as president, assistant secretary and assistant fire chief; a 60-year member of District VI Pennsylvania Forest Fire Wardens; a member of Allied Volunteer Firemen's Association, Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association and Martinsburg Sportsmen's Association; and a life member of the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed hunting and woodworking and was considered the consummate handyman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, Pastors Scott E. Schul and Linda S. Banaszak officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, St. Matthew Lutheran Church or The Village at Morrisons Cove.
