Martha was a graduate of Wellington (Texas) High School with the class of 1936. Years later, she entered Texas Women's University and graduated with honors three and a half years later in 1958. She and her family then moved to Alamogordo to teach in the public schools. Martha taught creative writing and English. She earned her Master's degree from the University of Texas at El Paso, and published several collections of folklore of the Texas Greenbelt area. Martha also served as editor for various other area authors and taught at Park University in Alamogordo High School for about 27 years, serving as chair of the English Department, sponsor for organizations including the Class of 1962, the National Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll and Creative Arts Club, and the Nike Club. She was active in the Alamogordo and New Mexico Classroom Teachers Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the Alamogordo Business and Professional Women's Club. She was an early member of the Alamogordo High School Scholarship Foundation after establishing the John F. Lee and John Scott Lee Scholarships. Martha was an active member of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, holding a variety of positions and serving as a frequent program presenter. She was editor of "The Drumbeat", a newsletter of the Democratic Party of Otero County, a member of the Alamogordo Public Schools Facilities Task Force, and served on the scholarship committee of the Otero County Association of Education Retirees. She was honored in May of 2004 when the Spirit of Women plaque was unveiled at Founders Park in Alamogordo.
