John died in Alamogordo after an illness of a few months. He had been a teacher and coach at Wellington High School, Wellington, Texas in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He established the school's very successful boxing program, for which some of his students received regional and national awards. He was husband of Faye Handley, and brother-in-law of Mrs. Bura Handley.
