Avis Martha Lewis Goodwill-Gloff was born February 18, 1917 in Columbia Heights, Minnesota to John and Helen (Duty) Lewis. In her early years times were very difficult. She shared memories of living in a boxcar, having little to eat and recalled days in North Dakota when they would decorate tumble weeds as Christmas trees. She spent her early teens and young adult life in Minneapolis working as a waitress where she met her future husband, Richard. Avis married Richard Goodwill in 1943 in Olathe, Kansas. During World War II Richard worked as a SeaBee on construction projects in the Alaskan wilderness. When the War was over Richard and Avis traveled throughout the Midwest where Richard worked as a heavy equipment operator, eventually settling in the San Francisco, California area. Later Richard worked on Mare Island in Vallejo, California, where they lived until they returned, homesick for Minnesota. She and her family lived in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and later bought a farm in rural Sandstone, near Lake Eleven. Avis enjoyed being around people so did well at jobs at the Co-op Grocery store and Our Own Hardware store in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Following Richard's death in 1973, Avis returned to California and lived with long time friends Gen and Johnny Heuser.

In November, 1981, Avis married Herbert P. Gloff and they made their home in El Sobrante, California. Avis loved to travel and visited Germany, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Jordan, Hawaii, and numerous other states. Herb passed away in 1996 and Avis, once again, made her home with the Heusers. Avis moved to Round Rock, Texas, in July of 2004, where she lived with Richard and Patricia, becoming a part of their congregation and making new friends there.

Avis passed away peacefully in her sleep August 27, 2012 at "A Touch of Home" in Round Rock, Texas at 95 years of age.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, grandson, Troy Goodwill, husbands Richard Goodwill and Herbert Gloff, son Dennis Goodwill.

Avis is survived by son Richard (Patricia) Goodwill of Round Rock, Texas, daughter Barbara (Abdullah) Tayyeb of Fair Oaks, California, daughter-in-law, Gwen Goodwill (Wayne) of Tucson, Ariz. 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Kroschel, Minnesota. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
