She was the only daughter left at home when her mother died. She was especially close to her brother Paul who died at age 17 after being sick for many years. She kept his post card collection all of her life.
She married Edward E. Dillie on Aug 28, 1911 in Parker City, Randolph County, Indiana. He was nine years older than her and evidently lied to her about his age. She thought he was born in 1881 which would have made him only five years older. They moved around with his work and she cared for their only child.
Ed became very ill and was sick for at least a year before he died. Emma found herself a widow with a nine-year-old son to care for with no resources. She went to work at Ward-Stilson Company in Anderson as a seamstress making dresses. In some ways it was good that this happened before the Great Depression, because she already had a job. During the War they made uniforms and shortly after they went out of business. After that she worked in department stores as an alteration lady. She was a very talented seamstress.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
