Durango and the entire community were saddened today by the death of Walter A. Peterson, who passed away at 7:00 Wednesday evening, March 17.
For the past four or five years Mr. Peterson had been in failing health. His illness, which became increasingly severe, assumed critical nature the last few weeks, although he carried on his work and business interests until the very last.
Born at Minneiska, Minnesota, June 23, 1874, Walter Peterson had made his home in Durango for the past twenty years during which time he established the mortuary business, which bears his name.
About ten years ago he purchased the Earl Barber home, on Tenth Street. Known and loved for his spirit of cooperation, for his honesty in business and social dealings, Walter Peterson has always been regarded as a leader of the community and the city. His kindness and friendship stand out in the memories of all who have known him.
When a young man of 22, Mr. Peterson went from Minneiska, where he was born, to Aneta, North Dakota, where he joined his brother in the hardware business, which they later bought and enlarged to include an undertaking establishment.
In 1899 he was married to Eva Mae Dissmore. To that union four children were born, two of whom survive. In 1923 the Peterson family moved to Durango, where Mr. Peterson established the mortuary business in partnership with T.H. Jones. That partnership was later dissolved and since that time the business has been known as the Peterson Funeral Home.
A member of the Methodist Episcopal church in North Dakota, where he took an active part in Sunday school work. Mr. Peterson maintained his affiliation through the Durango church. He was also a member of Durango Lodge No. 45 A.F. and A.M., and of La Plata Chapter No. 83 Order of Eastern Star.
Deceased was 68 years of age at the time of his death. Surviving him are his wife, Eva Mae Peterson, of Durango; a son, V.J. Peterson, of Provo Utah; a daughter, Mrs. Flossie Brown, of Glendale, California; three grandchildren, Craig Brown, of Glendale and Ann and Susan Peterson, of Provo; and two nephews, Roy and Paul Peterson, both of Enderlin, North Dakota.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed yet and will be announced later.

Funeral services for the late W.A. Peterson will be held Monday, March 22, from the Peterson Funeral Home, at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. H. E. Root, of the First Methodist Church, will officiate at the services, which will be in charge of Durango Lodge No 46 A.F. and A.M.
Members of the Durango Masonic Order will serve as pallbearers. Interment will be made in the Masonic plot at Greenmount cemetery.

Mr. Peterson was born June 23, 1874, in Minneiska, Minn. and educated in the public school there. After graduating he served with various hardware, furniture and undertaking firms in Minnesota and South Dakota. In 1900 he was married to Eva Mae Dissmore of North Dakota. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Virgil, and a daughter, Mrs. Flossie Brown.
In 1926 Mr. Peterson and Thomas Jones started the present Peterson Funeral home, and for the past few years Mr. Peterson has been in charge of the mortuary.
