A charter member of the Portland Junior League, Helen Smith Besson, who lived at 12433 SW Edgecliff Road, died at her home Saturday at age 87. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Riverview Cemetery chapel. Private interment will be in Riverview Cemetery. Born in Portland, Mrs. Besson was a lifetime member of the Portland Art Museum and a supporter of the Portland Junior Symphony since its founding. Survivors include her husband, Dr. John H. Besson Sr.; son, Rear Adm. (ret.) John H. Besson Jr., Portland; daughters, Mrs. William W. Bildsoe and Helen C. Besson, all of Portland; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Portland Junior Symphony or Holaday Park Hospital. (The Oregonian, 27 Jan 1976)
