Pioneer Industrialist’s Son Dies At Age 84

Walter Garfield Emanuel Smith, 84, native Portlander, died Monday at Crestview Convalescent Center after a prolonged illness. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Riverview Cemetery Chapel with arrangements by Miller & Tracey Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith, third son of Charles Emil Smith, a pioneer iron founder and industrialist, was born Sept. 19, 1881, in Portland. He was graduated from old Failing School and attended Portland High School and Bishop Scott Academy.

As a young man he spent several years in the Klondike and Nome, Alaska, returning here to enter the lumber firm of Inman – Poulsen.

He joined his brothers during World War I in the Smith and Watson Iron Works and the Columbia River Shipping Corp.

Mr. Smith remained until his death as an owner with his brothers of the Congress Hotel, built by his mother in 1911. The hotel is owned by the Willamette Hotels, Inc.

He was an inventor and made contributions in the designs for valves and screens essential in the paper making industry. His most recent was a fishing rod holder.

Mr. Smith retired in 1946 and moved his residence to Longbranch, Wash., on Puget Sound.

Survivors include the widow, Lura May; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Link, Charlottesville, Va., and Mrs. Virginian Rowlan, Portland; two brothers, Stanley C. E. and Charles E., Seaside; a sister, Helen E. Beeson, Portland, and eight grandchildren.
