NORFOLK - James Asa Fentress, 82, of 2639 Somme Avenue, the husband of the late Mrs. Annie Murphy Fentress and a son of John Henry and Mrs. Diana Hargrove Fentress, died in a hospital Wednesday at 1:20 a.m.
A native of Princess Anne County, he lived in the area all his life.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church Chesapeake, and a retired carpenter.
He is survived by three sons, Asa Purnell Fentress and Elbert R. Fentress of Virginia Beach and Ernest Layton Fentress of South Boston; four daughters, Mrs. Virginia Dawley of Norfolk, Mrs. Evelyn Carroll and Mrs. Louise Herndon of Virginia Beach, and Mrs. Helen Brown of Plymouth, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Grace Pedersen of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Alonza Fentress of Virginia Beach; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Friday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Daniel D. Dickenson of Lafayette Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park.
