Capt. James N. Sims seems to have omitted his youngest full brother, William Strange Sims, from his account.
Cicero Sims (p. 35 of Frederick A. Sims' book) says, "William S., married Salina Strong." And (beginning on p. 35), "William S. Sims, the youngest son of the first set of my father's children, was made Captain of Company F, 86th [Indiana], by the vote of every member of the Company at its organization. He commanded the Color Company in the charge on Missionary Ridge. The flag was shot down, the staff being shot off short. He picked it up by the stub and with the flag wrapped around his arm, jumped the Rebel bank. A Rebel lay in waiting behind the bank. He made a dash at the flag, failed, and was overpowered in an instant. He surrendered with the remark that he 'was watching that d----d flag for an hour, but I didn't get it, did I?' I had this history of the affair from Captain Perry Gorham."
In 1972-1973, Lela Wolfe Prewitt published Ancestors & Descendants of Thomas Sims of Culpeper County, Virginia, Edmund Butler of Virginia and Kentucky with Allied Families & Other Culpeper Data. On p. 61-62, she has extensive information about William Strange Sims and his descendants.
