MARY ALICE ABEL

Mary Alice (McDowell) Abel, 77, died suddenly at her home in Newton on Thursday morning, Oct. 12, 2006. She and her husband were newcomers to Newton having lived over 30 years in Creston.

Mary Alice was born and raised in Chariton. The daughter of Stella and Harry (Mose) McDowell, she graduated from Chariton High School and married her high school sweetheart, Wayne Abel in 1947.

Faith, family and friends were the center point of Mary Alice's life. Sit long, talk much, laugh often could have been her own personal motto. It was said that, "she could talk to a rock." Friendships were not taken lightly, but treated as meaningful treasures.

Volunteering was simply a way of life for Mary Alice. She was very active in the First Christian Church in Creston where she and Wayne played an integral part in helping establish the united efforts of several area churches and their youth programs in supporting the Appalachian Service Project.

After Wayne's retirement in 1992, they spent several winters as volunteer workers in the visitors center at Hot Springs National Park. She and Wayne were also involved with the Iowa State Fair volunteer program from its inception, camping at the fair and working in the information booths where they logged 10 years of service.

After 59 wonderful years of marriage, she leaves behind her loving family: husband, Wayne; two children, daughter Cathy (Phil) Nelson, Maple Grove, Minn. and son, Kyle Abel, Newton; four grandchildren, Jeff Nelson (Amber Penny), Champlain, Minn., Angie (David) Webber, Coon Rapids, Minn., Katie Abel and Devin Abel, both of Newton; and three great-grandchildren, Logan Abel, Newton, and Morgan and Gavin Webber, Coon Rapids, Minn.

Mary Alice is also survived by two sisters: Leta (Steve) Grgurich, Williamson, Carol (Telfer) Epp, Aliso Viejo, Calif., one brother, Fred (Sue) McDowell, Johnston, Iowa and many nieces and nephews of which she doted upon. She also leaves behind many near and dear friends.

Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m., at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.
