Carol Pauline Epp passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on June 28, 2016 at the age of 80, surrounded by her family. Carol lived a full life and experienced the joys of being a daughter and sister, a wife, a mother and mother-in-law, a “grammy”, an aunt, a pastor’s wife, a runner, a cyclist and a breast cancer survivor.

Carol was born in Chariton, Iowa to Harry Mose and Stella Amy Routt McDowell on June 13, 1936. The youngest of four siblings, Carol spent her early years in Chariton, attending the First Baptist Church and graduating from Chariton High School with her best friend, Norma LaRue. Carol loved music, was a natural saxophone player and member of the Chariton High School Band. She also played the piano and loved to sing. She could often be found outside playing ball with her father, Mose, and was a member of a traveling softball team. Carol often told her boys how much she enjoyed sports and being outdoors with her Dad.

After graduation from high school, Carol married Telfer Lee Epp in Chariton, Iowa. They moved to Topeka, Kansas and were blessed with two sons, Dennis and Tim. They then moved to St. Louis, Missouri until 1964 when they relocated to Des Moines, Iowa. She loved being with family and when she saw her mom, dad, her sisters, brothers, their families and her very old friends, her eyes would brighten and her smile would shine.

While in Des Moines, Carol raised her boys and passed on her love of baseball and other sports. She had a long career with the State of Iowa, and she tended the family while Telfer earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree and worked full time. Carol traveled with Telfer on mission trips and sabbaticals to far-flung places including the Congo, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Alaska, Scotland and England.

Upon Retirement, Carol and Telfer moved to Newport Beach, California to be near her sons and their families. After raising boys, she experienced having daughters through Susan and Linda. During this time in her life, she took guitar lessons, started running 5 and 10K races, began cycling and rode across Iowa on RAGBRAI with her family. She also studied genealogy resulting in a detailed McDowell family tree going back to 13th century Ireland and Scotland as well as multiple family histories for the Epp family and the McDowell Clan.

Carol loved being a grandma and was available to babysit at a moment’s notice. She would cross every river, climb every mountain and sail every sea for Erin, Taylor and Tanner. She played soccer and baseball with her grandkids well into her 60’s and 70’s and never tired of watching their games. She loved her grandchildren, playing “stair ball”, baking, and playing baseball or any other sport.

Carol will be greatly missed by all. Even in her later years, she still played the Sax, danced to the music in the park and sang with her friends. We remember her passion for St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Minnesota Viking football, Drake basketball, Cyclone football and her grandchildren’s sports. Carol is survived by her husband of 60 years, Telfer, her sons Dennis Epp (Linda Gordy) and Tim Epp and his wife Susan and their children Erin, Taylor and Tanner. Also by her sister, Leta Grgurich, and sister-in-law Sue McDowell.

We rejoice that Carol is reunited with her father and mother, sister and brother-in-law, Mary Alice and Wayne Abel, brother George Fred McDowell and brother-in-law Steve Grgurich in Heaven.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial on July 16th, 2016, at First Baptist Church, 8250 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, IA. Visitation will be at 9:30 AM. The Service will be at 11:00 AM with a luncheon served afterward. Inurnment will be at 10:00 AM Monday, July 18, 2016 at the FEBC Cemetery in Henderson, NE.
