SEAMAN, FARMER, NATIVE OF SHETLAND

Arthur was the son of William WILLIAMSON and Catherine MORRISON (or THOMSON), and grandson of Magnus WILLIAMSON and Jane NICHOLSON, all natives of Shetland.

His death certificate states that his father was William Williamson, that he was the husband of Lillis Williamson, and that he had been born on 2 March 1808 in the Shetland Islands. This record further states that Arthur, a farmer, aged 78, died of acute cystitis (bladder infection) on 1 April 1886 at Two Creeks, Manitowoc Co., was buried Manitowoc City (now Evergreen) Cemetery, and that the informant was J. Plurrens, MD., of Two Rivers, Wisconsin [Manitowoc County VR hereinafter Manitowoc Co. Vital Records, Deaths, vol. 3, p. 196, filed 31 Dec. 1886, Manitowoc Cemetery Index].

Arthur's siblings apparently all remained in Shetland, although a few of Andrew's children immigrated to New York City and Colorado. His sister and brother Elizabeth and Magnus died as paupers attesting to the poverty from which Arthur fled by immigrating to Wisconsin.

Scottish records indicate that Arthur was a farmer and a seaman and US records indicate that he was a farmer.

He was christened at Moullay, Delting, Co. Shetland, Scotland on 29 February 1808 [Old Parish Register, Tingwall].

Arthur, of Hamrigarth, Parish of Weisdale, married Lilias (Lillian, Lily, Lelice) THOMPSON, of Grairn, Parish of Weisdale, at Tingwall, Co. Shetland, on 20 November 1833, in a ceremony by the Reverend Jno. TURNBULL [Old Parish Register, Tingwall].

In the 1841 Scotland Census for Co. Shetland at Catfirth, Parish of Nesting, we find Arthur, 30, small farmer, his wife, Lillias, 30, oldest son, Arthur, 14 (with his grandparents), his daughter, Janet, 6, son, William, 2, and sister, Elizabeth Williamson, 28 (Census 007/ 2/ 3).

In the 1851 Scotland Census for Co. Shetland at Newpark (hard to read), Chalderness, Parish of Tingwall, we find his wife, Lillias, 41, sailor's wife, farming 1 acre, daughter, Janet, 15, agricultural laborer, son, William, 12, scholar, and daughters, Lillias, 9, and Ann, 1 (Census 010/ 7/ 8). At that time at Gardie, Parish of Weisdale, we find his son, Arthur, 16, scholar, born at Tingwall, living with his grandparents (Census 010/ 10/15).

In the 1855 Valuation Roll for Chalderness in Tingwall Parish, Arthur is listed as a tenant.

Arthur and Lily immigrated to the USA by June 1855 with their children, Arthur W., Janet, William, Ann, and Robina, and settled at Rowley (Two Creeks), Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin, by 1858 [Obituary of His Daughter, Ann Cotting, in The (Two Rivers) Reporter, Sat. 24 August 1907, Front Page, col. 6; 1860 U.S. Census, microfilm].

Arthur, a sailor, had bought a boat that he sailed across the Atlantic, and beached once they reached the USA. They sailed to Wisconsin via Fort Dearborn [Detroit]. In the USA, they off-loaded the boat, chopped it up, and used it for a temporary dwelling [Daniel Henry Lahey, Summer, 1990].

They were enumerated there at the Village of Manitowoc as having 2 males, 6 females, all foreign born, on 1 June 1855 in the State Census [Ward 2, p. 16].

His son Arthur landed in the Port of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a year later, in May 1856, and filed a declaration of intent to immigrate to the US on 31 May 1856. Arthur or his son was a patentee for 80 acres of land in Manitowoc County (T21N, R24E, Sect.22) on 22 February 1858 [Manitowoc Co., Land Patents, online].

On 21 June 1860, Arthur and Lilia (Leillius) and five of their children, apart from Janette who had married and moved to Chicago, were enumerated together at the Town of Rowley, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin, in the 1860 US Census. Rowley was renamed to Two Creeks in 1861 [Dr. L. Falge, History of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, p. 324-5, 1907]. Arthur was enumeraed as a farmer.

The Williamson family remained at Two Creeks, where they were enumerated in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses, where Arthur was a farmer (see also 1872 and 1878 Two Creeks, Manitowoc Co. plat maps, section 22). Their farm was located a 1½ miles northwest of the farm of J. LAHEY, whose son, Edward, married Arthur's daughter Ann Cotting.

Arthur and Lillice were enumerated at Two Creeks by the 1880 US Census on 1 June 1880 where Arthur farmed and Lillice was keeping house. Son Isaac was the only child still living with them. Arthur had developed dementia by this time [1880 US Census, p. 11].

Arthur is the "Otto WILLIAMSON, an old and well-known resident of the town of Two Creeks (who) was buried in Manitowoc last Sunday" [The Manitowoc County Chronicle, Tues. 6 April 1886, Page 3, Col. 2].

Arthur was survived by his wife, Lilias; daughters Anna LAHEY and Robina BODWIN; and son, Isaac M.
