Jesse was born in Monticello, KY on April 16, 1918 to Millard Atkinson and Betsy Catron Atkinson and moved to the Dearborn County area as a young man.
He served his country in the US Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945, serving for a time in Italy.
On December 16, 1941 he married Iralue Peercy, and she passed away exactly 6 years ago on December 4, 2005. Jesse and Iralue lived in Moores Hill for a number of years when he was employed at the Dillsboro Health Resort in maintenance, a position he held for many years. Jesse then became head of the laundry area at Dillsboro County Hospital for 18 years. They moved to Dillsboro when he accepted the position at the hospital. Jesse loved music and was active in a kitchen band in Dillsboro and was one of the "old rascals" that played in various nursing homes in the area.
He also played in a house band in the senior center in Rising Sun, and was a member of Dearborn Diamonds, a pool club. He started shooting pool at age 89, and has won trophy's that he was very proud of. A devout Christian, Jesse attended Hope Baptist Church in Dillsboro.
Surviving Jesse is his fiancée, and special friend, Patricia Speckman; 3 sons, Jesse Samuel Atkinson Jr., and his wife, Janice, of Jacksonville, FL, Dennis Atkinson and his wife, Joyce, of Mooresville, IN, and Mike Atkinson and hkis wife, Nancy, of Indianapolis; 2 daughters, Barbara Bruce and her husband, Elbert, and Leatha Tudur, and her husband, Charles, both of Dillsboro; 1 brother, Tom Atkinson; 1 sister, Irene Lorett; 16 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife, Iralue, in 2005, 1 daughter, Doris Ann Atkinson; 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Jesse will be Friday, December 9, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Baptist Church, with Pastor Tom Holt officiating.
Friends may meet his family on Thursday, December 8, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. at Hope Baptist Church. He will be laid to rest at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro.
Memorials may be given to the Neurofibromitosis Foundation (NF Association). Arrangements have been entrusted to Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
