Esther was the second of eight children born to Sallie and Ross Lemon. Her siblings were Guy, Irene, Glenn Dewey, Erma, Ruby, Loren and Leo. At age 14, Esther's father died and her mother took the family to Mott, ND, to live near her sister. In 1911 Sallie applied for a homestead where the family lived for a few years before moving to Mott. In 1912 Esther met and married Frank Gerts, they had four children, Bud, Ruth, Helen and Jean. Due to poor health, Frank took Esther and children to Colorado to live. The family later settled in Albuquerque.
