Leo met Fern McCance in high school and they married soon after graduation. They had four daughters: Jolene, Shirley, Anna Lee and Alice Jean; 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Following his untimely death from an untreated infected tooth, his daughters were cared for by relatives.
Leo was the eighth child born to Sarah Lucinda Hedrick and Ross Lemon. His siblings were Guy, Esther, Irene, Glenn Dewey, Erma, Ruby and Loren.
When Leo was 8 months old, his father died. His mother took the family to Mott, North Dakota, where Sallie's sister lived. In 1911, Sallie applied for a homestead. The application was granted and the document signed by Sallie and President Wm. Howard Taft.
Sallie and her oldest son built a sod house on this homestead and lived there for some time before moving to the nearby town of Mott. During the years spent in North Dakota, the family endured many hardships.
In 1923, Leo's oldest brother Guy was offered a job in Salina, Kansas and the family all came along to live in Salina.
