Irene was the third of eight children born to Sallie and Ross Lemon. Irene's siblings were Guy, Esther, Glenn Dewey, Erma, Ruby, Loren and Leo. When Irene's father died, her mother took the family to Mott, ND, to live near her sister. Her Mother applied for a homestead, where the family built a sod house and lived for a few years before moving to Mott. In her early twenties, Irene was engaged to a young man who joined the army. Due to developing heart problems, Irene died before he returned home.
