David Padilla Burciaga passed away at 88 years of age with his devoted, loving family at his side. David is preceded in death by his parents, Ynez Ramos Burciaga and Natalia Padilla Burciaga and his infant brother, Moises. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy Trudeau Burciaga; his children, Lydia Burciaga Lostaunau (Charles), David Burciaga Jr., Ruben Burciaga (Petra). His grandchildren are Tom Chris Martinez (Katherine), Robert Martinez, Nikki Burciaga, David Bryan Burciaga, Ariana Quintanilla (Jesse), Christina Burciaga and Karina Garcia (Gilbert). David is also survived by great grandchildren, Janee Nicole Martinez, David Gabisch, Christopher Alexander Martinez, Louie Acosta, Breanna Quintanilla, Jacob Quintanilla; and great-great-grandchildren, River Padilla, David Bryan Burciaga, Isaiah Sky Huntington and Nicole Love Huntington. David was born in Bakersfield, California on July 19, 1923. He attended Lincoln School through the 7th grade. A veteran of WW II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945. David was classified as a conscientious objector due to his humanitarian convictions of non-violence and refusal to bear arms. He served as an Army Medical Technician assigned to the 82nd Hospital Train Detachment in Europe. David received Battle Stars for the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Rhineland campaigns and was awarded various decorations and citations for military merit. After the war, David's perspective of life changed. He devoted his life to fighting for solutions to help improve the quality of life for the disadvantaged. In 1946 he worked for the Cotton Compress & Warehouse, and was a union rep for the International Longshoremen & Warehouse Union, which was David's first exposure to organizing. From 1950-65 David was an activist with the Community Service Organization (CSO) where he served on the Board of Directors at the local and national levels. David was employed by The American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, from 1964-87. He started as a community development advisor (1964-70) for a farm worker self-help housing project in Fresno County. From 1970-82, David was assigned to work with the United Farm Workers Union to promote non-violence. He spent 11 years as a negotiator, and six years as Director of the Negotiations Division. This task was a natural for David, who was among a small group involved with the beginning of the United Farm Workers Union, and who had previously worked with Cesar Chavez in the 50's at CSO. In 1982, David organized the United Communities Coalition to work on local issues such as fair housing and medical care for indigent adults. He was a co-founder and organizer for Las Fiestas, Inc. and was a 28-year member of the Eagles Aerie 93. His children remember the man who taught them to think before acting, to value hard work, to always be fair and to not depend on money to make you happy. Dad was a patient man who taught you lessons by example. He loved to cook, and made the best pancakes and Steak a la Chicana in the world. His family and friends will miss David's smile, humor and quick wit.
