" LATINO AMERICANS " ... Episode 3 : WAR AND PEACE.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
THE OPENING MINUTES CONCERNED " Ensign MANUEL GONZALEZ " WITH A COUPLE PHOTOS OF HIM IN UNIFORM AND WITH A GROUP OF PILOTS IN HIS SQUADRON.
IT CALLED HIM THE FIRST AMERICAN TO DIE AT PEARL HARBOR - ALREADY KNOWN. BUT I HEARD ANOTHER THING WHICH I LEARNED FOR THE FIRST TIME -- A VERY BRIEF ON CAMERA INTERVIEW FROM CURRENT TIMES OF A GUY WHO WAS PRESENT AND EVIDENTLY WENT ON TO RISE THRU THE RANKS {
HE HAD A CHEST FULL OF RIBBONS, MEDALS AND BADGES } HE SAID MANUEL HAD RADIOED INTO BASE [ {AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS. ENTERPRISE ?] [FORD ISLAND, PEARL HARBOR ?] SAYING HE WAS COMING IN AND NOT TO SHOOT AT HIM.
THIS GUY CLAIMED TO HAVE KNOWN MANNIE PERSONALLY ... HE SAID THAT WAS THE LAST THEY HEARD FROM HIM.

World War II is a watershed event for Latino Americans with hundreds of thousands of men and women serving in the armed forces, most fighting side by side with Anglos. In the Pacific, East L.A.'s Guy Gabaldon becomes a Marine Corp legend when he singlehandedly captures more enemy soldiers than anyone in US military history. But on the home front, discrimination is not dead: in 1943, Anglo servicemen battle hip young "Zoot suitors" in racially charged riots in southern California.
After the war, Macario Garcia becomes the first Mexican National to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor for his exploits fighting in Europe, only to be refused service in a Texas diner. The experience during the war pushes Latinos to fight for civil rights back home. A doctor from South Texas, Hector Garcia, organizes the American GI Forum, transforming himself into a tireless advocate for civil rights and the friend of a future president. Although Latinos make significant gains, the journey for equality is far from over.

Ensign M. Gonzalez, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #6089 in 1939. Entered active service via the Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.
Ensign Gonzalez, a pilot with Scouting Squdron Six (VS-6), and his Radioman/Gunner, RM3c Leonard J. Kozelek, were part of a flight launched from the USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6), returning to NAS Pearl Harbor (located on Ford Island) in the early morning hours of 7 Dec. 1941. They and their aircraft never made it, and no trace was ever found.

The last radio report overheard was Gonzalez telling Kozelek to break out the life rafts. It is believed they were attacked by Japanese aircraft off the shore of Oahu. Based on the time heard, it is believed Ensign Gonzalez was the first Naval Aviator to lose his life on the 7th.
