Ensign Gonzalez, a pilot with Scouting Squdron Six (VS-6), and his Radioman/Gunner, RM3c Leonard J. Kozelek, were part of a flight launched from the USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6), returning to NAS Pearl Harbor (located on Ford Island) in the early morning hours of 7 Dec. 1941. They and their aircraft never made it, and no trace was ever found.
The last radio report overheard was Gonzalez telling Kozelek to break out the life rafts. It is believed they were attacked by Japanese aircraft off the shore of Oahu. Based on the time heard, it is believed Ensign Gonzalez was the first Naval Aviator to lose his life on the 7th.
