Athelia was the daughter of Rev. Arthur and Pennie Jane Lowry Maynor. She was an educator and never married.

The following was taken from the Jan. 3, 1968 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Funeral services for Miss Athelia Maynor, 56, who died Sunday following several years of illness, was conducted Tuesday afternoon in Mr. Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church, and burial was in St. Anna Cemetery. The Rev. James D. Leggett, the Rev. Roy Maynor, and the Rev. Robert Mangum condcuted the service, and since she was for many years a teacher in Pembroke, a eulogy was delivered by Young Allen, county school superintendent. Bobby Maynor sang.

Pallbearers were Wayne Maynard, Lonnie Maynor, Vann Maynard, Julius Maynor, Eugene Maynard and Bracy Maynard. Flowers were arranged by the women of the church and the women of the Deep Branch School faculty.

***NOTE: In 1936, she received a degree from what is presently known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In July 2007, the Heritage Walk was dedicated to serve as a permanent monument to all of the university's graduates from 1905 to 1954. Athelia was honored by having her name engraved on a brick in the Heritage Walk walkway in front of Old Main, the oldest building on the campus.
