After serving as Georgia's youngest governor from 1931-1933, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1933, and served until his death in 1971. The oldest of the three Senate office buildings in Washington is named for him, and his statue stands in the lobby of the building. He was a member of the Warren Commission in the 1960s.
