Julia Mary Cross Williams passed away Tuesday morning, May 29, 1973 in Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas. Mary, as she was known, was a native of Wyoming, daughter of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. George H. Cross of Braehead Ranch on Upper LaPrele Creek. She received her education in Cheyenne and Montreal. She taught in local schools for several years and received a Presidential Appointment as Receiver of Public Monies for the United States Land Office which included Converse, Natrona, Niobrara, Fremont counties and the Salt Creek Oil Fields. She served for four years and received more than 18,000 homestead filings, totaling over twelve million dollars. Mary was the first and only woman appointed as Receiver in the United States and was in Who's Who of America. She worked in Casper for an oil company and some prominent lawyers. She established the H Bar V Guest Ranch near Cold Springs which became a beauty spot and popular place for many celebrated guests. She is survived by three sisters, Alzire Cross, Maizie Ball, Emma Morton; and one brother, William H. Cross, nieces and nephews.
