Emma "Criss" Cross Morton, 94, died after a short illness at the Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas. She was the daughter of George Harry and Lea Marie (LeVasseur) Cross, Wyoming pioneers, at the Braehead Ranch in the Beaver Community southwest of Douglas. She was reared and educated at the ranch for her elementary education. She attended and graduated from Saint Mary's Convent in Cheyenne. From there she graduated from the University of Nebraska where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. In 1932 she married Jeffrey B. Morton in Detroit. They moved to the Buckshot Ranch near Douglas, where they spent several years, later moving to San Francisco. Jeffrey was employed by the Chrysler Motor Company and preceded her in death. She moved to Oakland, Calif. where she bought a home and lived many years coming to Wyoming to spend her summers. In 1991, her home was destroyed by the Oakland Fire. She came back to Douglas to live at the McComb Retirement Center. Emma wrote many historical articles about the history of Converse County and especially a three-volume book about the Wyoming Cross family with its ranch history. She belonged to the Wyoming Pioneer Association, Writers Guild of California, Panhellenic, and numerous other groups. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Barbara Cross and Mary Cross, both of Douglas; and many nieces and nephews including Robert C. Hawley, George Ball, Rory Cross, Robert Cross, Richard Cross, George "Tim" Cross III, Roderic Cross, Mike Cross, Mary Julia Wilson, Elsie Deininger, Dorothy Cross, Margaret Velinga, Francis Wittenburg; and her beloved little dog "Dolly." She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters; and four brothers. (Information was obtained from her obituary and cemetery records.)
