Floyd Wendell Heckadon, 75, of Windsor, Missouri died Monday, October 17, 2011, at the home after a long battle with emphysema.

Floyd was born April 13, 1936, in Rich Hill, Mo., the son of Andrew Joseph and Louella Josephine (Jose) Campbell Heckadon. Floyd grew up in the Rich Hill, (Bates Co.) MO area. Floyd married LaNora Anderson on July 31, 1961, in Butler, Mo, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 31, 2011.

When asked why he joined the Army since all of his brothers had been inducted into the Navy, he grinned and stated he had received a letter in the mail advising him that he was in the Army now!

Floyd proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Army before retiring. He was a soldier that understood the meaning of duty, honor and country! Floyd was the recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor, as well as other military medals. Floyd was on a boat heading to Korea when he was returned home due to the death of his father "Curly" in Rich Hill, MO, on February 6, 1961.

Floyd did one tour in Vietnam and two tours in Germany. While stationed in Germany, he and his family had the opportunity to visit Bavaria, England, Holland and Austria. Floyd was stationed in Wichita, KS; El Paso, TX; and he worked as a recruiter for seven years in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Floyd enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and especially fishing. He enjoyed many hours on his boat at Truman Lake in MO with his neighbor "Doc."

Floyd enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Despite his long battle with emphysema for many years, his door was always open to family and friends for visits that included good stories, lots of laughs and good times that his family and friends will always cherish and hold close to their hearts. One of Floyd's best known sayings when you were ready to depart his home was "Glad you got to see me!" His family and friends are truly glad for the fun times they enjoyed with Floyd when they visited him!

In addition to his wife, LaNora, Floyd is survived by daughters Carrie Lou Goodsell; Connie Marie Smetana; three grandchildren, Michael, Zachery and Lexie; sister-in-law, Carol Jean Heckadon; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Louella "Jose" Heckadon; brothers: Ernie, Bob, Charles and Jack Heckadon; and sisters, June Cox and Wilma Hobson.

Interment with full military honors was held on November 7, 2011 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO. Floyd's veteran marker shows: SFC USA; Vietnam; BSM ARCOM with his thoughts "What a Ride." His wife's thoughts: Iddoitagn."

SFC=Sergeant First Class; BSM=Bronze Star Medal; and ARCOM=Army Commendation Medal
