Bernard G. Bosch, 80, of Elgin, formerly of St. Charles, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, October 10, 2011. He was born January 18, 1931, in Newman, IL the son of Anthony and Em (Rund) Bosch.
Bernard is survived by his loving children Pam (Paul) Van Bogaert, Adam (Kimberly) Bosch, and Greg (Tracey) Bosch, his son-in-law, Warren Bowman; his precious grandchildren, Candice (Matt) Wilson, Andrew Van Bogaert, Michael Van Bogaert, Briellen Bosch, Blake Bosch, Brennan Bosch and Kyle Bosch; Georgina and Maxwell Bowman; his great grandchildren, Jacob Van Bogaert and Chloe Wilson.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Georgia (nee Petersen) Bosch on October 13, 2008, his daughter Melissa Bosch-Bowman on July 19, 2005.
University of Illinois graduate in 1954, Bernie joined Robert H Anderson and Chuck Willet in Dixon, IL. While at their engineering firm, Bernie was called to service with the Army (1955-1957). He was sent to Korea to help in rebuilding, guiding Korean workers through the process. While there, he received honors for his work.
Upon return, Robert (Bud) Anderson had opened his own firm in St. Charles, on Main St., the northwest corner of Main St. and 1st Ave. Bernie was invited to join the firm. Over the years, Bud was like a father to Bernie, an excellent relationship. The office was on the second story, above Simon's Shoe Store with a perennial "Going Out of Business" sign in the window!
While on Main St., Bernie was sent to Belvidere to over see the plans for the sewage treatment plant and wells, living in a trailer there. In 1958, he met Georgia at Majestic Ski Lodge in Lake Geneva. After their engagement, Bud and his wife Miriam hosted a dinner shower at their home on 3rd Ave. (built by Georgia's Dad, George L. Peterson). This was the first couples shower that we had ever attended. Remembering gifts makes a chuckle: fuses for the fuse box, flashlight, laundry basket, spices… whatever happened to simple gifts? The following October 1959, they were married. A year later at Thanksgiving, 1960, their first daughter Melissa was born to them.
Bernie moved his family to the old George Lamb residence in 1962, a few weeks before their daughter, Pamela was born. George Lamb was the former city engineer. At this time, the RHA firm was trying to locate plans from the original Fox River Bridge to no avail. As Bernie cleaned out the Lamb garage, he came across plans and other information that helped RHA continue with the refurbishing project.
The office was moved to Riverside Dr. in a converted house south of the Il St. bridge, absolutely nothing professional looking, but typical of the times. While there, Bernie had two sons, Adam (1965) and Gregory (1968).
Bud later purchased the old factory building on State St., next to the Police Station. Bernie moved his family to 1104 Wing Ave., coming home for lunch as was his custom for years.
The sewage treatment plant in St. Charles was Bernie's pride and joy. The office flourished and Bernie bought stock from Bud. When Mr. Anderson retired, Bernie became president of the company. Later he took on two partners who bought him out when Bernie retired, and then they were bought out by Frank Gorham.
Bernie followed up on the construction of East Dundee sewage plant, which he had designed, for the next two years.
Prior to this, he designed and contracted their home in Galena, IL where he and Georgia lived for twelve years, returning to this area just prior to the death of their daughter, Melissa, in July 2005.
His life was full of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, church, art, golf, reading and watching sports as much as he would get away with!
