Jonathan Robert Carmack was born to Samuel B. Carmack and Mary G. "Polly" Davis Carmack about 1841 in Edgecombe county, NC. This family migrated to Coffee County, Tennesse about 1844 with Mary Davis' family. Samuel B. Carmack moved his family to Hardeman county before 1860 census and on to Gibson County, Tennessee before 1870 census.


Robert "Bob" Carmack was a widower with two young daughters, Laura A. and Anna D. Carmack. Jonathan Robert Carmack married his second wife Martha Elizabeth Jane Holder July 6, 1873 in Dunklin County, Missouri. They moved to El Paso, Royal Township, White County, Arkansas, where they were listed in the 1880 census living near his brother Pell and Willoughby.


A marriage record for Jonathan Robert Carmack has not been found for the mother of these two daughters. A marriage record of Jonathan's second wife was found in Dunklin County, Missouri to Martha Jane Holder on July 06, 1873. His wife may have died in childbirth when Anna D. was born in 1871.

Martha and Jonathan Robert "Bob" Carmack had four children, Pell C., Amie Estella, Ossie and Jessie.

Sometime before 1900 two sons, Ossie and Jessie and Jonathan Robert Carmack died. Martha was left with Pell and Amie and no way to support them. Pell went to work as a farm hand for a family in Faulkner county, a neighboring county near El Paso. Martha moved to Van Zandt County, Texas to live with her brother James Holder. Amie Estella Carmack married George Alvin Lee July 21, 1901 in Lampasas, Texas. Amie and George had six children and Amie was expecting her seventh child when she had an accident, killing her and her infant son. Amie was born April 19, 1885 in El Paso, White Co., Ar. and died September 15, 1916 in Logan, near San Jon, Quay County, New Mexico.


Pell C. Carmack married Nannie McClanahan 1908 and they were living in Scurry County, Texas in the 1910 census. Martha Carmack was residing in the home of her son. They moved to Maricopa County, Arizona where they were listed in the 1920 and 1930 census. Their death certificates listed Double Butte Cemetery as place of burial.


Information on the oldest daughters---Laura A. Carmack married John W. Laycook August 21, 1881 in White County, Arkansas and had a daughter, Dora. Laura died young, before 1900, leaving her daughter to be reared by another Carmack cousin. Dora Laycook married her second cousin, Samuel Anderson Carmack. Anna Carmack married William Calvin Gaylor July 20, 1891 in White County, Arkansas and died before 1900. Anna did not have any children.
