This is a memorial for Pellam Poinsett Carmack who is assumed to be buried in an unmarked grave by his daughter's family, Mary Ella Carmack Emison.


Pell was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, the son of Samuel B. Carmack and Mary "Polly" G. Davis who were married May 27, 1840 in Edgecombe Co, NC. Polly Davis was the daughter of Jonathan Davis and Sarah Green Davis, the granddaughter of John Davis, Jr and Pherebe Davis, and great granddaughter of John Davis and Lucretia Ann Riding/Redding. There are wills in Edgecombe co, naming children for the Davis family. Polly G. Davis Carmack was named in her father's will.

The Carmack family moved to Coffee County, Tennessee with Sarah Davis, widow of Jonathan Davis, and most of her children between 1843-1845, and were there in the 1850 census, then moved on to Hardeman county, Tennessee in the 1860 census,and finally to Gibson county, Tennessee where they are found in the 1870 census records.


Samuel B. Carmack and Mary G. Davis had 8 children.

John Wesley Carmack born October 1845 Coffee Co., Tn. married Penny Curtis January 1, 1868 Dyer Co.,Tn--had two daughters, Mary Ann, who married James Madison Hendricks February 24, 1889 in Dyer Co, Tn had a daughter Dora Hendricks who married William H. Scott and is buried in Hickman Cemetery, Hickman Co., Tn.--Mary Ann divorced James Hendricks and married Herndon Courtney September 4, 1917 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. Mary Ann died September 11, 1960 in Birmingham and is buried in Richmond, Virginia and Dora Carmack married Ernest Light December 26, 1895 Dyer County, Tennessee, died before 1900. Penny died young and John married again to Jo Anna Dodson December 19, 1875 Dyer County, Tennessee and had two sons, Ulphin Samuel Carmack married Susie L. Lawson December 1902 in Swan Bluff, Hickman County, TN and had six children. Ulphin Samuel lived in Birmingham in 1910, McCurtain Co, Ok in 1920, Tarrant Co, Tx in 1930 and died in Ventura County, California August 22, 1959; and Walter Luther Carmack who married Martha E. Crawford June 6, 1906 Ardieta, Jefferson County, Alabama and had a son Leon H Carmack. John was living with his son Walter Luther Carmack in Brookwood, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1910 census. John Wesley Carmack died August 11, 1911 in Brookwood, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

4. Willoughby John Carmack born May 1847 Coffee Co., Tn. married Eliza Jane Cannon recorded on April 24, 1867 in Gibson Co., Tn. had 10 children died July 12, 1908 Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Ar. and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Ar.

6. William Franklin Carmack born January 1853 Coffee or Hardeman County, Tn--died September 27, 1919 in Callahan, Duval County, Florida buried in Curve, Lauderdale Co., Tennessee---Married Demetra Avery had 5 children in Lauderdale Co, Tn.

Samuel B. Carmack and young son Frank were living in the home of Pell Carmack and Ann R. Fleming Carmack in the 1870 census in Gibson County, Tennessee listed (pg5,dist20,Robinsville, Gibson Co., Tn.). Mary G. "Polly" Davis Carmack, Margaret and Mary are not listed in the 1870 census and are assumed to have died between 1860-1870. A Mary Carmack is listed, but is most likely Mary Fleming age 27, who resided with the Carmack family. Samuel B. Carmack is not listed in the 1880 census, and is assumed to have died between 1870-1880.


There are marriage records of some of the Carmack family in Gibson County. Pell married Ann R. Fleming January 23, 1867 in Gibson County, Tennessee.


Pell and two of his brothers, Jonathan Robert and Willoughby "Willie" John Carmack, along with some of Ann Fleming Carmack's family moved to El Paso, White County, Arkansas in the spring of 1878. The family loaded thier wagons on barges in Memphis and floated the Mississippi River to the mouth of the White River. They unloaded their wagons off the barges at Des Ark Port and came over the hills to El Paso, a community just west of Beebe in White Co., Ar.


Note: The youngest brother of Pell Carmack's mother, George Washington Davis, brought his family to Faulkner Co., Ar., a neighboring community to El Paso about the same time that the Carmack family settled in El Paso.


Pell and Ann had eight children,

2.Charles Edward "Edgar" Carmack -married Lydia Burns

3.Samuel Anderson Carmack, Sr.-married Dora Laycook--2nd cousin, daughter of Laura Carmack and John W. Laycook

Ann died when Eben was born. Pell moved to Argenta, North Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Ar. to find work. His children moved there in 1895. Ann's sister and daughter, Mary Fleming Emison and Mary Carmack Emison raised Eben in the Emison home they shared. A letter written by her husband Henry McGee to Pellam Poinsett Carmack--his uncle by marriage. Pell Carmack married Ann R. Fleming, the niece of Martha Fleming McGee.

This letter tells about Pell Carmack's plans to move to Arkansas, we know the move was postponed until after the birth of Maude, who was born December 3, 1877 in Dyersburg, Dyer county, Tennessee.

Mr. Carmack.

Dear Sir,

I have seated my self to right (write)you a few lines in answer to yours of the 4th of March

which came came to hand and we was glad to recieve it for we had not heard from you in a long time before. I recon you will think of have been a long time answering it, well it is a task for me to right (write) now. I am so nervous that I can hardly right (write) so as to be under stood well this leaves us in tolerable health atthis time and we hope it may find you enjoying the blessing of health. My health has not been good for the

last two month, I have been having chills occasionally for some time. Martha has a sick spell not and a while. We are living by our selves most of the time I have rented out my land. I am not going to try to raise any crop of only some little patches. It rains so much that it looks like a gloom. My prospect, for cropping there

is but little planting done, yet, and rains all most every day. We want you to come see us before you go to Arkansas as you said in your letter you thought youwould by to this fall. Martha says to tell Mary of she is not particularly engaged thas she thinks that shemight come and stay with us a while any how we want to see you all very badly but we cant come there we hardly ever leave home any distance for we have become so

frail we can't stand much fatigue. Come and see us ifcan and if you can't right (write) to us for we like to hear from you. Times are hard here in regard to many matters provisions and tolerable plenty a reasonably cheap I have nothing more that would interest you at this time so I close for this time.
