Mabel was the eldest of five children born to Wilhelmina and Peder "Peter" Winterton. All of the children spoke Norwegian until they started school and became bilingual, learning to speak English. Her parents divorced while she was in her youth. Later, Mabel and her siblings moved with their mother to Omaha NE where their mother ran a boarding house. Mabel never married. She turned her skill as a seamstress into earning an income. She remained in the family home after her mother's death, and resided with her sister, Bessie and her family until Mabel died at the age of 80. She continues her closeness with her family in death by being buried next to her mother, brother Edwin and sister Myrtle.
